The Legendary King of Pop: Michael Jackson

A performer, an entertainer, a musical genius,the legendary King of Pop left the earth on June 25th.Although,he's not with us in a physical presence ,his spirit, his music, especially his dance moves will remain as one of America's icons. I first received the news while reading the Cheetah Girls creed, immediately I thought of my first cousins and the days I spent at their apartment listening to Michael Jackson LP's .Michael Jackson music bought people from all walks of life together a man, his music, with a message, My favorite album was Off Wall , favorite song "Rock With You" throughout the years I enjoyed the Thriller album , also the I'm Bad Album and video. The news of his death was especially upsetting because it brought back memories of my family during at time that we shared holidays as well as large meals together. Today,I am miles away from that family I once knew and loved so well.With all  the Michael Jackson memories  we have shared I also  recall when my oldest cousin Big ----- received the news that Teddy Pendergrass had fallen off the stage and for days she along with Teddy Pendergrass fans remained vigilant, yet, somber and melancholy mood because they did not know the extent of his injury. Rumors about Teddy Pendergrass injury ran rampant unit lit was confirmed that he was paralyzed. Of course when the news slowly trickled out that Michael Jackson had a heart attack it was not specified exactly how serious the attack was until a day or two later with the confirmation of his death. As an adolescent, I was fortunate to attend the Jackson Victory concert in Miami . Today, I still have my Victory tour souvenirs. Michael Jackson will be greatly missed by fans. A musical giant has left the earth still his music will remain  part of American and Black music History.

Originally,mmm…music was not an initial part of the planning for cacjohnson.com web site, however, after a few months of working on the other articles for the web site along with re-reading what was already written, I made the decision to break up the monotony, mood, and tone of the web site to include music lovers. With an additional spot for music, on the cacjohnson web site, the music aspect presents a different  side of consumer spending as it pertains to music and the music industry. Often the question arises and presents itself in different media arenas, has marketing and advertising executives gone too far to promote individual artist? I can immediately think of several media stunts , that sparked public opinion ,for instance, the performance of Prince at an music award show wearing bright yellow pants with the butt cut out and exposed, or the opening half time at football game as Janet Jackson performs her breast nipple is exposed caused a big media frenzy even more,scandalous and remarkably bad, good  girl, Christina Aguilera image  change in her video "Lets Get Rowdy "which at first glance resembled a mini (orgy )party. In the music industry,the exposing  of flesh has created alot scandal.  Other artist such as Chuck D, Controversial, as well as, raising the public awareness to issues that affect the black community artist such as Chuck D and his lyric about New Orleans that include the treatment of blacks during hurricane Katrina elicits response from the public and several news stations.

Decades of Sound:mmm…music, today music is everywhere, it’s in television ads known as jingles, on cell phones know as ringtones, music is also in grocery stores, malls, and local chain stores all play music while customers shop to creates a pleasant shopping experience, The different genre of music include: R&B, Rap, Hip Hop, Country Music, Gospel, Alternative Rock, Classical Rock, and Classical Music(Symphony’s).Because of the different types of music allows people of all walks of life to find a sound or artist, the array of music provides listening pleasure for all age groups , as well as, cater to preferences. Over the past decades music including the music industry has change significantly from one decade to the other with listeners being able to distinguish the change through the distinct sound of each decade. Of course the music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s up to present day has different sounds. With each decade signaling changes in the industry by a  for specific individual artist or bands for example Elvis Presely,the Beattles,The Monkeys, The Partridge Family, the sounds of Motown , the Temptations, the  Four tops, Gladys Knight& the Pips, James Brown, Ray Charles,Parliament and Funkadelics,Barry Manilow,Pink Floyd, Jim Hendrix, Patti Labelle,Whitney Houston, Mick Jagger, and Rod Stewart to name a few artist that signified change in the music industry which makes it easy for music listeners to determine the decade the of  the sound especially for music fanatics. What is music? Is it a spoken word, is it a certain sound, is it a beat…exactly, what is music?....mmm…music. The changes in music and the music industry is noticeable from the lyrics to the sounds produced by various artist, to the fashion worn by individual artist. Born in the 70’s, I grew up listening to R&B and alternative rock/music. During the time that I lived with my grandmother, my oldest aunt who looked after me when my grandmother was at work preferred listening to alternative rock/music  artist like the Bee G’s,Hall&Oats,Blonde,Steve Nicks, Rod Stewart, and Mick Jagger.On the other hand, my older cousins who I would frequently visit during the week and weekends,during my visit would allow me to play their   stereo that had two big speakers plus a record player, not surprisingly, when I would visit my cousin I listen mostly to R&B because the majority of the records my cousins kept was R&B,for example,artist like Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye, The Parliament, Atlantic Starr, and Michael Jackson. The fashion of the 70’s centered on big afros, bell bottom pants, mini skirts, and mini dresses with wide belts. As an adolescent I was not a music fanatic but  I enjoyed listening to certain artist more than others. Often, I listen to music for the lyrics, and the message it presents artist like Christina Aguilera, or Whitney Houston, nonetheless, a good beat, a good drum, an acoustic guitar or electric guitar would just draw me in to the sound which help me to appreciate the music.
