National Consumer Alert:

Safety First/Public health officials prepare for swine flu pandemic in the United States.

A confirmed forty cases of the swine flu has been reported in the U.S. As of April 27th, it has been reported that 141 Mexico citizens has succumb to the viruse. The swine flu unlike the common flu  is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruse found in pigs, whereas the common flu viruse is a contagious respiratory illness found in humans. The flu which is known to the medical commnuity as influenza is a viruse.Likewise the swine flu is also a viruse with the exception that it is a viruse found commonly in pigs. The swine flu that is currently present in the United States and Mexico the"CDC has determined that this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human."  The intial finding of the swine flu  began in late March and early April 2009.More importantly, the swine flu is considered a more virulent form of the common flu.In most instances the symptoms of the flu can be mild to severe. In fact, the swine flu has some of the same symptoms as the common flu.Indeed, the symptoms of the swine flu is similar to the humanflu,as previously stated, the swine flu is considered more virulent and has been transmitted from swine to person, person to person, ultimately infecting the general populaton. Although the swine flu has been deadly in Mexico City,at the same time,it is important to cite that the flu viruse has been known to cause death among Americans.Specifically,in the in United States;not surprisingly,Americans gather every year in doctor offices to get vaccinated from the flu, especially elder Americans. In addition to the elderly getting vaccinated, public health officials has cited that during the flu season people with certain health conditions, including  infants, and pre-adolescences has a greater risk of having complications from the flu viruse; therefore, it has been recommended by public health officials that they also get vacinated.Although, the typical flu season in the United States usually peaks between January and February, clearly, the current cases of swine flu in Mexico and several states in the US has caused  among public health officials. The flu which is also known as influenza"Since the beginning of the 2008-09 flu season, influenza activity has remained low in the UnitedStates but is now increasing."As a result, each year public health officials advise Americans to get the flu vaccine. It is stated by the CDC "on average 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu" as well as"200,000 people are hospitalized from flu and 36,000 people die from flu-related causes." ;however,"... the past 26 flu seasons, the peak of the influenza season has occurred in November one season, December four seasons, January five seasons, February 12 seasons, and March four seasons." Certaintly,American consumers should use the same precaution taken during the flu season to prevent the spread and complications of the swine flu.Besides getting vacinated for the flu, public health officials stated that  covering nose and mouth when you sneeze, frequently wash hands, and avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth, as well as limit contact with infected individuals. has stated the flu vaccinated might not have an affect on the swine flu viruse, yet, other treatment for the viruse is available. Unequivocally,American consumers who has a greater risk of flu complications during regular flu season should take necessary precautions to avoid risk of swine flu in case of a pandemic in the United States.---cacjohnson

National Consumer Alert:

Swine Flu Outbreak incites concern among public health officials,April 2009:

Public Health Officials states"it's unusual to see the flu in April"---

American Public Health Officials take precautions against the spread of swine flu in the U.S.,after Public Health Officials report of swine flu cases in Mexico.First reported out ofMexico City, the swine flu has the potential  to become a pandemic. It has been reported that 68 people in Mexico has already died from  the current strain of swine flu. Subsequently, Public Health Officials has begun to take precautions to eschew Swine Flu Pandemic in the UnitedStatesandMexico.Ostensibly,1000 people in Mexico City have been sickened by the swine flu.Surprisingly, the death toll over next couple of weeks is expected to proliferate because prompt treatment of infected citizens has been slow or delayed. Although, a vaccine is not readily available in Mexico,Public Health Official state there is treatment.Yet, the cause for delay of treating citizen is because the current strain of swine flu found in Mexico is a new strain.Meanwhile, Mexico City citizen wait in queues to get vaccinated, yet, Public Health Official state the new strain of swine flu is not covered by regular flu vaccine;however, getting vaccinated is one step to taking precautions againstapandemic. Moreover,in the United States eleven cases of the swine flu has been reported. Futhermore, the swine flu that has been reported in  states such as California, Kansas, Texas,New York and Ohio is much milder than the swine flu reported in Mexico City; in most instances, individuals in the UnitedStates infected with the swine flu has complained of  nausea, dizziness and fever. Although, the cases of swine flu in the United States is not as virulent as the swine flu case in Mexico, public health officials continue to prepare for a pandemic. In their efforts to prepare for a pandemic, Public Health officials state there is much unknown about the current strain of swine flu in Mexico City. As public health officials prepare for an possible outbreak in the United States, health officials continue to work and analysis the strain in Mexico comparing it with the strain in the United States. In the United States treatment is available for the swine flu; however, in Mexico City the treatment is either not given or not readily available.  Health official states that Americans should begin to take precautions. Also, public health officials state certain common drugs known to treat the flu  might not be effective in treating the swine flu. Consequently, the new strain of swine flu in Mexico has caused  public health officals to become disconcerted. The reason for public health officials discontentment over recent report of swine flu in Mexico is because the current strain of swine flu is not like the average strain of flu. The current strain of swine flu reported in Mexico is being transmitted from swine to person, and person to person which is highly contagious.

To conclude, incontrovertibly,Americans should take precautions from spreading the flu as wellas the swine flu. The following steps every American can take to prevent  flu outbreak as well as the swine flu is listed below, the list is provided by Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Peanut Corporation Of America (PCA) in BlakelyGeorgia has issued another warning about the possibe contamination of other products that they are now including in the national recall. The additonal items that might be contaminated are available for consumers who can "... call the following toll-free 24-hour number 1-877-564-7080 for further instructions on what to do with the product or visit the company website at www.peanutcorp.com for additional information."

For the month of January 2009:

National Consumer Alert:

I woke up this morning January 18,2009 to the news of a national peanut butter recall due to salmonella contamination this is what I found out about the recall on the internet, also for more information view the  your local news station listing via internet, I chose  from the top 8 listings. Below is an quoted excerpt from www.ktka.com:

"Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), a peanut processing company and maker of peanut butter for bulk distribution to institutions, food service industries, and private label food companies, today announced a voluntary recall of peanut butter produced in its Blakely, Georgia processing facility because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

All product affected was produced on or after July 1, 2008, specific to the lot numbers and descriptions listed below.

The peanut butter being recalled is sold by PCA in bulk packaging to distributors for institutional and food service industry use. It is also sold under the brand name Parnell’s Pride to those same industries. Additionally, it is sold by the King Nut Company under the label King Nut. PCA customers who received the recalled product are being notified by telephone and in writing.

None of the peanut butter being recalled is sold directly to consumers through retail stores.

“We deeply regret that this has happened,” said Stewart Parnell, owner and president of PCA. “Out of an abundance of caution, we are voluntarily withdrawing this product and contacting our customers. We are taking these actions with the safety of our consumers as our first priority.”

PCA initiated this recall after an open container of King Nut brand peanut butter in a long-term care facility in Minnesota was found to contain a strain of salmonella. King Nut brand peanut butter is produced by PCA.

According to the Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the Minnesota laboratory analyses on the contamination in the already-opened container of peanut butter have the same genetic fingerprint as the cases in the national outbreak that has sickened almost 400 people in 42 states.

The voluntary recall of 21 lots of its peanut butter, in containers ranging from five to 50 pounds, is being taken immediately. PCA is notifying its institutional customers and has set up a toll-free hotline number 1-877-564-7080 to answer questions.

PCA is continuing to work closely and cooperating with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as state officials as part of this ongoing investigation.

According to a CDC update issued on their website today (January 13, 2009), preliminary analysis of an epidemiologic study conducted by CDC and public health officials has suggested peanut butter as a likely source. The CDC and other public health officials are continuing to conduct surveillance for cases of infection with the outbreak strains, and to gather and analyze data or exposures that may be associated with illness. To date, no association has been found with common brand names of peanut butter sold in grocery stores.

Customers are asked to take all peanut butter manufactured with the lot numbers listed below out of distribution immediately. Customers can call the following toll-free 24-hour number 1-877-564-7080 for further instructions on what to do with the product or visit the company website at www.peanutcorp.com for additional information.

Eating food contaminated with Salmonella can result in abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and fever. Most people infected with Salmonella develop the symptoms 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses. For more information on the salmonella bacteria, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Website at http://www.cdc.gov.
